Ms. Catherine Cooper, Senior Instructor and Clinical Coordinator in the 勛圖惇蹋 Dept.
of Radiologic Sciences, was selected as the "Best Local College Professor" in Lagniappe's
2020 "Nappie Awards". Lagniappe is Mobile, Alabama's independent weekly newspaper
which has more than 80,000 readers every week. Since 2003, they have sponsored and
hosted the annual "Nappie Awards", where favorite local people, places, and things
are chosen by readers' votes. Congratulations, Ms. Cooper!
The University of South Alabama Department of Physical Therapy Year 1 students advocated
for the Physical Therapy profession at PT Day at the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery,
Ala., on March 4, 2020.
Ian McCullough, a senior student in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, has received
the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology travel award to present
his university honors research work (Dr. Thulasiraman Lab) in San Diego, CA. The title
of his presentation is Understanding the Interplay between Human Epidermal Growth
Factor Receptor 2 and Neuraminidase 1 on the Regulation of Fatty Acid Binding Protein
5 in Breast Cancer Cells.
Congratulations to all of the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship students and
undergraduate research volunteers for completing research projects under the direction
of Speech Pathology and Audiology faculty. Each student presented their research at
勛圖惇蹋's annual undergraduate research symposium on November 1, 2019.
Several Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health Professions employees were recognized
for their years of service at the 2019 勛圖惇蹋 Employee Milestone Celebration. This dinner
is to celebrate the employees with at least 25 years of service. Invitations are also
extended to employees who are celebrating 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 years at 勛圖惇蹋.
During this event, 25 year employees receive their medallion. Below are the CAHP employees
that received recognition at the dinner.
Doctoral Intern and 4th year AuD student, Aryn Clark, and Speech Pathology Graduate
Intern and 2nd year MS SLP student, Kelsey Gross, presented Audiology and Speech Pathology
Services at the Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care Veterans Expo on November 14, 2019.
Congratulations to Katelyn (Katie) Rogers, a junior Biomedical Sciences student, on
being selected as one of the six oral presenters at the recent 21st 勛圖惇蹋 Undergraduate
Research Symposium. This event was held on 1 November, 2019 and showcased the work
of seventy-seven undergraduate 勛圖惇蹋 students whose posters were on display. Katies
presentation was based on a project she did as a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship
(SURF) student from May-July. The SURF program creates opportunities for exceptional
students to participate in scholarly research projects under the supervision of a
faculty mentor. Katies presentation was titled Developing a Novel Quantitative Assay
to Determine the Antibacterial Effectiveness of Chemically Synthesized Molecules Attached
to Fabric Surfaces. Dr. Terry Ravine, also from Biomedical Sciences, was her project
mentor while Drs. Kevin West and T. Grant Glover both with the Department of Chemical
& Biomolecular Engineering, College of Engineering served as project advisors.
勛圖惇蹋's Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology in partnership with Tubes2Tables
hosted a workshop in the 勛圖惇蹋 Student Center entitled "Childhood Apraxia of Speech:
From Diagnosis to Treatment". The 95 participants consisted of current graduate students,
former graduates of the program, and regional speech-language pathologists from Florida,
Alabama, and Mississippi. Topics discussed at the workshop were definition and characteristics
of CAS, tools for differential diagnosis, and treatment and monitoring of progress.
Rebecca M. Smith, M.S., CCC-SLP, was the guest speaker at the workshop. Ms. Smith
is the Therapy Director and Speech Therapy Supervisor at Rehabilitation Associates
and Aveanna Company in Falls Church, VA. She also co-founded The Childhood Apraxia
of Speech Network- Hampton Roads (CASN-HR) support group.
Mrs. Dr. Susan Gordon-Hickey (Associate Dean, Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health
Professions) and Bernadette Standifer (Secretary V, Department of Biomedical Sciences)
were selected as members of the 2019 US-A Team as part of the Christie Miree 勛圖惇蹋 National
Alumni Association Outstanding Employee Service Award Program.
The Class of 2020 raised $9,919 for The Learning Tree. Every year, the 勛圖惇蹋 PA Studies
Program didactic class selects a philanthropy then hosts a fundraiser to support the
cause. This year the Class of 2020 hosted Craws for a Cause, an annual crawfish boil
and silent auction, that allowed us to raise money for such a special cause. The Learning
Tree is a nonprofit organization that provides services including residential housing
and education for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities, such as
autism.
The 勛圖惇蹋 Department of Emergency Medical Services was one of three local organizations
awarded equipment grants from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation. The EMS
dept. received CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) training equipment,
including 32 skill guides; five AED trainers and accessories; four CPR manikins; and
an upgrade kit.
Senior, Lindsey Culp, and her mentor, Dr. Kendrea Garand, from the Department of Speech
Pathology and Audiology, presented their work, Does Aging Effect Esophageal Bolus Transit Time in the Upright Position Observed Under
Videofluoroscopy?, at the international Dysphagia Research Society's annual meeting in San Diego, CA.
Co-authors include Dr. Wang (University of South Alabama) and Dr. Martin-Harris (Northwestern
University).
Mrs. Bernadette Standifer (Secretary V, Department of Biomedical Sciences) was selected
as a member of the 2018 US-A Team as part of the Christie Miree 勛圖惇蹋 National Alumni
Association Outstanding Employee Service Award Program. Team members are nominated
by their coworkers and are selected as US-A Team members on a competitive basis. This
is the second year in a row that Mrs. Standifer has achieved this prestigious recognition.
We congratulate her for "making a difference" in the BMD department by providing excellent
service to our students and faculty members.
The annual Cardiorespiratory Care awards ceremony was held April 19 at their senior
luncheon. Academic and clinical awards were presented to the outstanding graduates.
Academic and clinical awards for highest program GPA are sponsored by the Alabama
Society for Respiratory Care and an award for the entire time at 勛圖惇蹋 is sponsored
by the Dean's office. Those receiving the awards included, David Friedel, winner of
the Chair's award for clinical excellence; Lindsey Merritt, winner of the Dean's award
for academic excellence; Hannah Alsheikh, winner of the Chair's award for academic
excellence.
Congratulations to Monica Lake Lolley for being selected to present her research at
the 2018 National Conference of Undergraduate Research at the University of Central
Oklahoma. Her poster abstract submission, "Effects of Incentives on Stage of Readiness to Change for Physical Activity in College
Age Students" was chosen from more than 4,000 submissions. She is pictured with Dr. Jeremy Fletcher,
Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy.
Congratulations to Cosette Baumgarten, a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow, who
was selected for one of six Outstanding Research Awards. Her work entitled, Effects of Stimulus Presentation Timing on Multimodality Sentence Recognition in Older,
Normal Heading Adults, was presented as an oral and poster presentation at the 19th Annual Undergraduate
Research Symposium sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Research. She was mentored
by Dr. Kimberly Smith in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology. 
The Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health Summer 2017 Paramedic Graduates raised
$1,845.20 for the Mary Ann Tally Memorial Endowment Fund at the first CPR Challenge!
Students received pledges for minutes of effective CPR performed. This challenge led
to a total of 1,391 minutes of effective CPR and a tidy donation to help aspiring
Paramedics attend school. We're very proud of our students for their accomplishments
both inside and outside of the classroom.


Congratulations to four faculty members of the Dept. of Occupational Therapy for receiving
grant awards from the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and ILC initiative. The
faculty members include Donna Wooster, Ph.D., OTR/L; Candra Taylor, MS, OTR/L; Robin
Deacy, MS, OTR/L; and Tracy O'Connor, OTD, OTR/L. Each of the faculty members will
run an independent research project within the next calendar year and present at the
2018 Conference on Teaching and Learning.
Kayla Ford represented the Adult Speech and Language Lab at the 2017 annual Clinical
Aphasiology Conference in Snowbird, Utah. She presented a poster entitled Rate, Accuracy, and Comprehension of Oral Paragraph Reading in Persons with Aphasia, which incorporated portions of her master's thesis project. This ongoing study is supported by a grant awarded to Dr. Smith by the University of South Alabama's Faculty
Development Council.
Congratulations to Paul Dagenais who earned the 2017 Covey College of Allied Health
Research Award for his outstanding achievements in the field of speech-language pathology.
Dr. Dagenais was recognized for his national and international contributions to speech
research including over 30 publications in well-respected journals. He played a significant
role in the development of the Speech Pathology and Audiology Department's Ph.D. in
Communication Sciences and Disorders degree in 1992, and over the years he has successfully
mentored many students who have gone on to lead productive academic and research careers
of their own.
Congratulations to Rachael Short, Speech and Hearing Sciences, for winning 1st place
in the Section IX Poster Competition at the 2017 Alabama Academy of Science Conference.
Rachael's work was supported by the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF) program,
and was completed under the direction of Dr. Kimberly Smith, Assistant Professor in
the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology. Congratulations Rachael and Dr.
Smith. 
A school level collaboration between 勛圖惇蹋s Department of Speech Pathology & Audiology
and the University of Kwazulu-Natals Discipline of Speech-Language Pathology has
formally emerged. Seven Au.D. and AuD./Ph.D. students from 勛圖惇蹋 spent two weeks in
Durban, South Africa, collaborating with UKZNs Discipline of Speech-Language Pathology
dept. The audiology students that were part of this partnership included Kelsey Alpeter,
Jessica McConnell, Shelby Tiffin, Casey Walsh, Sarah Weems, Kathleen West, and Peyton
Williams. During the visit, the students were exposed to real situations of the South
African healthcare system. Dr. Ishara Ramkissoon, Associate Professor in Audiology,
was the Faculty Lead for this collaboration.
Ph.D. student, Dongyin Mei, from the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology
presented research entitled Relationship Between Eye Movements During Reading and Severity of Reading Impairment
in Persons with Aphasia, at the annual American Speech-Language-Hearing Association convention. Her research
was completed under the direction of Dr. Kimberly Smith.
The Office of Student Activities is proud to announce the Student Academy of Audiology
as the December Student Organization of the Month.
Allied Health students from the Dept. of Emergency Medical Services and the Dept.
of Physician's Assistant Studies participated in one of the largest disaster drills
held annually in the area. Those participating in the drill also included local ambulance
services, fire and rescue departments and the Alabama National Guard, the U.S. Army
Reserve and the U.S. Army. View the
Members of the Student Academy of Audiology went to the Special Olympics held at Troy
University and performed hearing screenings, otoscopy, tympanometry, and OAEs on athletes
with special needs.
